Peterson Energy Logistics leads the way with next generation of workforce

Peterson Energy Logistics has this year boosted its apprentice and trainee intake, welcoming eight young people into the business.

The family-owned company, which has more than 100 years in business, is training up the next generation of the workforce with two-year apprenticeships and work experience opportunities in business administration and quayside logistics.

The young people joined mainly straight from school and the programme gives them the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience, while developing crucial soft skills to kick-start their careers.

Steven Burns, Group Head of Human Resources, said: “At Peterson Energy Logistics, we think in generations. And our increased investment in apprentices is driven by a rapidly changing workplace that makes it imperative that we have the skills – and the talent – to support those changes.

“As the industries we support transition to more sustainable energy sources, we too need to evolve how we provide logistics. This needs different solutions to problems and different ways of thinking.

“Investing in young people is one of many ways we support this evolution whilst our existing workforce pass on their years of valuable experience.”

And Peterson Energy Logistics is creating its own legacy through its track record of training and development, with several former apprentices having recently celebrated their 10-year anniversary with the organisation and now working in supervisory and management roles.

One of the success stories to inspire the new apprentices is Chris Carter, a former apprentice who is now the Overland and Warehouse Manager.

“The Peterson Energy Logistics apprenticeship programme was an invaluable first step in my career,” said Chris. “It provided the training, qualifications, and experience I needed to give me the confidence to progress within the company over the last ten years.”

Peterson Energy Logistics is also aiming to influence and inspire young people at an even earlier stage of their education, with three employees volunteering as Career Ready mentors at Aberdeen schools.

The programme empowers young people from under-represented backgrounds by connecting them with the world of work, providing workplace experiences, career insights and a network of support.
